$40,000 Back to Community in 2014
As a result of the very successful 2014 Okanagan Fest-of-Ale event, the Okanagan Fest-of-Ale Society Board of Directors, Coordinator and Volunteers is pleased to donate $40,000 in net annual proceeds back to the community this year.

At a presentation held at The Shatford Centre on Tuesday, September 16th, the Society’s Board of Directors were thrilled to distribute funds to 16 local charitable organizations. Highlighting the event was a $10,000 grant gifted to the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation and the announcement that, as of this year, the Okanagan Fest-of- Ale Society has surpassed the half-million dollar mark in charitable donations with $502,660 in cash having been “given back” since its inception in 1996.

The Okanagan Fest-of-Ale, one of the best known and well-respected events in the province, is a two-day Consumer Beer and Cider Tasting held at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre in early April each year. The event is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and staffed primarily by community minded volunteers - a set-up that makes “giving back” so generously possible.

“Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the 250+ volunteers who contributed to the success of the event in 2014 and previous years,” said Society President Randy Kirkoski. “Through their support, we are able to put on a quality event and give back $40,000 this year and over a half million dollars to date to the community.”

• Agur Lake Camp Society

19th Annual Event a Huge Success

A hopping good time was had by all who attended the 19th Annual Okanagan Fest-of-Ale beer tasting event held in Penticton April 45h and 5th. The caliber of brewers this year was outstanding. Wayne Schmuck, Marketing Chair of the Okanagan Fest-of-Ale Society explained, “This year we re-adjusted the layout of the space so we could accommodate 35 brewers, which represented the greatest number of brewers in the event’s history. Of the 35 brewers, 8 of them were new to the festival, which shows the reputation we are building for this event”. The nearly sold out event included a number of new features including food and beer pairings and a sizeable increase in the selection of real cask ales. Schmuck continued, “In addition to an increase in ticket sales versus previous years, we also saw a significant increase in hotel and tickets packages, a testament that people will travel to Penticton to attend this festival, and it also is a testament to the growth of the craft beer industry.”

Each of the 35 participating breweries put forward their best brews for judging. 2014 awards were determined by industry experts Joe Wiebe, Craft Beer Revolution; Jim Martin, Metro Liquor; David Beardsell, brewery owner/consultant; Mike Garson, Mike’s Craft Beer; and Allan Moen, NorthWest Brewing News.
